What To Serve With Beef Bourguignon: 10 Best Ideas
March 22, 2021
Beef bourguignon is one of my all-time favourite comfort dishes, and I'll often whip up a batch of the hearty, satisfying stew in place of a Sunday roast.
It's super simple to make in the slow cooker, and it's the kind of meal that you can be sure that the whole family will love.
If you're planning to make your own version soon, you might be wondering what to serve with beef bourguignon. There's a whole host of tasty side dishes, pairings, and accompaniments that you can choose from, from creamy mashed potatoes to al dente broccoli.
Let's take a closer look at some of your options…
1. Oxo roast potatoes
If you haven't tried Oxo roast potatoes before, you're in for a real treat! You can make these in an air fryer or in an oven, and their rich, beefy flavour makes them a fabulous side dish for beef bourguignon.
The secret to achieving those lovely crispy bits is to ensure that you parboil your potatoes, and give them a really good shake in a colander before drizzling in a little oil or cooking spray, sprinkling over your stock cube, and then cooking for a little longer.
2. Mashed potatoes
Creamy, buttery mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish for any beef stew, and are great for mopping up the juices.
Choose a floury variety of potato such as Maris Piper or King Edward. If your preference is for a really velvety mash, consider Desiree too. These are often used by top chefs and are recommended by the Potato Council!
3. Pasta
Beef bourguignon is a rich dish that's full of deep flavours like beef and red wine, so serving it with something that's fairly simple is often a good idea. You want your stew to be the star of the show, and sometimes if you choose something that's too flavourful, you'll find that the result is a little overwhelming.
This is why pasta is a good option for a beef bourguignon accompaniment.
If you have any leftovers, mix the stew with the pasta and you can just pop the whole lot into the microwave the next day for lunch.
4. Yorkshire puddings
If you're in the UK, you'll know just how important Yorkshire puddings can be when served with a Sunday roast!
They complement the flavour of beef just perfectly, and they'll soak up all the tasty juices from your bourguignon.
I highly recommend this Jamie Oliver recipe for perfectly golden and crisp Yorkies.
Yorkshire puddings are much more versatile than lots of people give them credit for. They freeze well too, so make more you need and serve the leftovers with jam for a sweet treat, or as a substitute for naan bread with a curry.
5. Rice
The light, fluffiness of rice makes it a wonderful side dish for rich, thick stews.
You can choose any that you have available in your cupboard… white, brown, or wholegrain will all make for a delicious meal!
6. Marmite roast potatoes
They say that you either love Marmite or you hate it, but I challenge anyone not to absolutely adore these Marmite roast potatoes!
They have a gorgeous, deep, Unami flavour, so are ideal when you want a really satisfying meal with depth of taste and the comfort factor.
7. Roasted broccoli
Broccoli contains an array of vitamins and minerals, and even folic acid.
Though boiling it is probably the go-to choice, you'll find that roasting it in the oven can bring out the flavour much better. Drizzle in a little oil and season with salt and pepper, then once it's ready to go, squeeze over some fresh lemon juice.
As beef bourguignon often contains carrots already, this is the perfect green side dish.
8. Green beans
The crunchiness of green beans make them a good choice for what to serve with beef bourguignon, and they'll bring a light and fresh element to your plate of traditional comfort food.
If you can get them locally, buy fresh. They usually have a much more satisfying texture than their tinned counterparts.
9. Salad
If you want a lighter option for what to serve with beef bourguignon, a green salad is a wise choice.
This is particularly true during the warmer summer months, or when you want to serve your meal at lunchtime.
10. Fresh baguette
Beef bourguignon hails from France, so a freshly cooked crusty baguette is an excellent side dish. This option is particularly good if you include a scraping of butter, and use your bread to mop up all those fragrant juices.
Don't have time to make your own bread? No problem! Look out for the partially baked baguettes that you'll find in most supermarkets. These tend to have a good shelf life, and you'll simply need to bake them in the oven for around 10 minutes.
